Dealing with Stress, Anger or a Sense of Isolation in Tenerife

Isn't it great when friends and family come to visit you in Tenerife and expect your life to be one long holiday? "What do you mean we can't go to Loro Parque today? We are only here for a week!'"

Yeah, right! You still have bills to pay, kids to get to school, a house to clean, mouths to be fed and a boss who is not likely to let you take any more time off for this, your third family visit so far this year. Or just maybe you came out to Tenerife to open your dream bar or restaurant only to find that you picked a nightmare location and your life savings are now trickling down the overflow pipe behind the bar.

Living in your home country you quite likely had a network of family and friends around you. It was easy to get together for a moan or a laugh, sharing your problems and lightening the load. But when you are fours hours flight away from your nearest and dearest and your spouse is doing your head in you can't just nip across the road for a bellyache with your best friend, can you?

Unless you touched down at Reina Sofia speaking passable Spanish it might take a while to build up a circle of friends. And without some Spanish skills, every visit to the medical centre or any government office is likely to be stressful as you struggle to understand what's going on.

So, what can you do? How do you manage your anger, deal with stress or handle the isolation that you or a family member may be feeling after the big move?

Here are a few suggestions. Please feel free to email me with your own.

  • Join a Spanish language class. This is definately a good move. Brushing up on your Spanish will help you out in so many everyday situations and you will be meeting a group of people who are in exactly the same position as yourself. You will feel that much more integrated and comfortable in any social gathering.

  • Follow your interests. Whatever rang your bell in your home country be it lawn bowls, church meetings, bingo, historical society, charitable organisations, football or skydiving, chances are you will find an equivalent group here. All the local papers have a What's On section and there you will find any number of social groups. If you have an interest in a particular sport find the local team and become a regular supporter.

  • Depending on the level of stress you are feeling you might feel like exploring more in-depth support. There are therapists who are stationed in Tenerife or pass through on a regular basis. One such person is Nicola Dexter, a qualified and experienced Stress Management Consultant and Hypnotherapist. Though based in London she has regular clientele in Tenerife. Carole Richards who is based in Tenerife offers Reiki, Hypnotherapy, reflexology and stress diagnosis. You can find out more about her by visiting her website: Tenerife Complementary Therapy.
One of the pioneers of Dance Therapy, Petra Klein also resides in Tenerife. In her own words, 'Dance therapy helps removing inner obstacles - the stones that scatter our path to spiritual wealth and feelings of joy and harmony.'

  • Lastly and perhaps most importantly - remember why you moved to Tenerife in the first place. Maybe you still work 9 to 5, maybe the kids still have tantrums, maybe you are missing your friends back home... but just maybe if you give yourself a bit of time and space to settle in, you'll find that Tenerife's warm climate, gentle lifestyle and constant sunshine will work its magic on you.
