Beauty Tips and Resources

Ruth Rankin
(right) is originally from Lancaster and has been in Tenerife for 12 years. She owns Blueberry Bobs Hair Group, located in Los Cristianos

My mother bought a bar in Tenerife so I came over to help her and see if I’d like to settle here. I’ve been hairdressing now for 18 years and have worked in some of the best salons in the UK - a brilliant guy from Vidal Sassoon trained me.

When I came to Tenerife I was 21; I had good qualifications and was ready for a challenge.

I set up my business in 1989; it just felt like the natural thing to do. After working as a hairdresser for other people, I thought it was time to try going solo. I believed that if I put 100 per cent into it, there was a good chance that I’d do well.

The biggest challenge was the paperwork, but I got there in the end. Anybody who’s in business knows that it isn’t easy at first. But, once you get to know the system, things just seem to fall into place – it’s easy when you know how!

I don’t stop all day from the minute I walk in. I cut hair, sweep up, make coffees, answer the phone and (sometimes) shampoo.

It’s the same for us all – we really work as a team. It took time to get established but now we’re busy every day.

My advice to others thinking of setting up their own business is to think through it properly. If you’ve got an idea, make sure that everybody else isn’t doing it already. Make it unique, stick to what you know and then just go for it.

The rewards involved in having your own business are amazing. Watching the business grow has been the best aspect, from starting it off on my own to building a great team of extremely professional stylists and technicians. I feel very proud of them all. That, combined with having the best clients I could wish for creates a buzz that has me on a constant high; and some of them are like friends to me now.
