Tenerife Golf - Abama Golf Resort
A lavish dream became reality in October 2005 as a 6,232 metre golf
course, created by former Ryder Cup player, Mark Thomas, opened with
a prestigious tournament that carried PGA European circuit points.
Abama Golf has quickly earned a glowing reputation for it’s golf
and the five star facilities. Taken over by the Ritz Carlton group in
June 2007, they have the experience and back up of a major chain but
from the moment you see the Moorish design, you will realize they have
a very individual style.
The setting is a west coast hill side near to the charming fishing
village of Playa San Juan with it’s busy quayside and a pebble
beach that is currently being converted to fine sand.
The 18 hole, including a trio at par three, course flows down to a
point 78 metres above the sea and is blessed with 25,000 trees, 22 lakes
and waterfalls, imported to compliment the views across to the island
of La Gomera.
The 5 star hotel boasts tennis courts, 8 swimming pools a 2,500 square
metre spa and a restaurant that has won many awards for it’s cuisine.
No wonder big names like Bill Clinton and Zinedine Zidane are among the
famous visitors.
The luxury has become permanent for some lucky people who have bought
Abama Luxury Residencies a series of high quality apartments, villas
and houses, each designed with an individual flair by Melvin Villarroel,
a man with 15 international architecture awards.
Colonial décor and spacious terraces help to complete the special
feel and of course every day can be different with so many delights to
enjoy. There’s even a secluded beach for the use of Abama residents
and guests.
The course is open from 8am until 8pm and players tee off at 12 minute
intervals. The fun doesn’t have to end on the main course as they
also have putting and chipping greens, a golf academy and a clubhouse
and bar.
It’s fair to say that green fees are higher than most other courses
on the island, starting from 112 euros and 60 euros for club hire, but
none can offer such a complete package and a chance to wallow in luxury.
Despite that rarefied air, Abama is also know for it’s popularity
as a family resort and it’s attention to detail. If they keep picking
up awards at their current rate, they may need to build an extension
soon. In their first full year of operation they scooped the Rheingolf
Award for best golf resort, but they are still striving for more.
