The Canary Islands are seven beautiful volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwestern coast of
Africa often referred to as Spain's tropical paradise. The archipelago
consists of
Gran
Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and
Fuerteventura and visitors to these islands are almost guaranteed excellent weather year round, plus a huge variety of scenery,
terrain and wildlife making property for sale in the Canary Islands a very good investment.
Tenerife is the largest island of the Canary archipelago and has an
extremely varied plant life, large wooded mountains including Mount Teide, Spain’s highest
point, long stretches of dark volcanic and white manmade beaches and
extensive agricultural areas where banana, tomato and potato are grown.
Gran Canaria, although smaller than both Tenerife and Fuerteventura, is
the most scenic of the Canary Islands and is home to half the entire population of the archipelago. It has endless stretches of sandy beaches, a
dramatic and stunning mountainous interior, desert like sand dunes and acres of lush green vegetation. Its excellent climate and diversity of natural
features has helped to make Gran Canaria one of the most popular year-round holiday destinations in the world.
Fuerteventura
is separated from the African continent by only a narrow
channel and this small island has several claims to fame. Fuerteventura is
the island with the oldest history as well as the longest beaches of all the
Canary Islands with fantastic beaches even close to the islands capital of
Puerto Rosario. It has become known as the “granary of the Canary Islands”
due to its farming past and the unusual sight of windmills can be found
throughout the island to this day.
Lanzarote is the most easterly of all the Canary Islands and lies in the
Atlantic Ocean just 60 miles from the coast of Africa. Although Lanzarote is the least mountainous of the
Canary Islands, its volcanic origin has created a landscape with over 300 inactive volcanoes. With warm
temperatures all year, a good deal of flatland, 250km of coastline and 99
mostly white sand beaches Lanzarote has become a favourite with those
wanting the quiet life.
Known in Spanish as
"the green island" or "the beautiful island" La Palma has the greatest
altitudes in the world relative to its perimeter. This is the island you
come to for the green-clad mountains soaring above oceans of sweet bananas
and vineyards and the wide variety of nature rather than the beaches.
La Gomera is crowned by the heavily-forested central massif Alto de
Garajonay National Park and is fringed by many deep ravines and gorges. In
fact La Gomera's interior is so mountainous that the islanders actually
developed a special whistling language to communicate across these gorges.
There are no decent beaches at all on La Gomera as the coast is mainly
abrupt sheer cliffs, but the island is renowned for its beauty.
