Brits are a patient lot, especially when it comes to the weather, but
faced with monsoon conditions, a rising tide of flood water and summer
slipping away fast, they have had enough.
There’s only so much Dunkirk spirit and stiff upper lip to go round
and everyone deserves a decent holiday, that’s why travel agents
have been hit with a barrage of last minute bookings for the scorching
sun of Tenerife.

The all year round climate means that even if soggy
Brits can’t escape by the end of their traditional summer months,
they can at least nail a winter sun holiday as a welcome pick me up.
Jet2 are based in Leeds,
close to the first big deluge’s
in the Hull and Rotherham areas in June. They are working flat out to
deal with a stampede of enquiries for a taste of Britain’s rarest
commodity, sunshine. Their flights go out of Leeds Bradford, Manchester
and Blackpool airports and there is no drought of takers. Mandy Round
is the General Manager of Jet2 and confidently reports that sales are
rocketing. “They are above where we anticipated they would be this
summer”.
Tenerife is already proving a popular winter choice as a replacement
for washed out summer holidays in the UK. Mandy Round can already
see the way things are shaping up “early bookings figures indicate
that there will be a knock-on effect for winter as families who have
holidayed in the UK look for cheap winter deals to the sun to try to
make up for the lack of sunshine and dry weather here.”
The internet has really come into its own as even the normally
happy task of popping to the travel agents has been ruled out
for many with flood waters showing no respect for the high streets and
the shops.
Faced with a choice of looking out of the window to see grey
skies and next doors cat, boating down the garden path, or the late offers
page
on the internet, there has been only one winner.
The beaches of Tenerife promise to be a little busier these
next few months and the weather refugees will be easy to
spot. Just
look for
the very relieved smiles on their faces, a water mark half
way up their legs
and a sturdy brolly doubling up as a sun shade.
