Tenerife entertainers
Scotty D, Kenny Stewart and Paul Stone all work as entertainers in Tenerife

Scotty D is originally from Georgia, USA and has been in Tenerife for 10 years. He is an entertainer/singer and lives in Guargacho.

I came to Tenerife because I was offered a job singing and playing guitar in a band called the Alabama Soul Band. Alabama’s used to be my favourite venue but it isn’t open anymore. Now it would be Soul Suite, because it has the right ambience for the type of music I do.

I see my job as a way of helping people enjoy themselves. Long hours spent rehearsing and entertaining audiences of all age groups involves a lot of concentration. It can be difficult to make it here but it all depends on how much experience you have. I’d say to anyone thinking of working here as an entertainer, to come prepared and do the best you can.

A typical day for me involves checking out new tracks for my show, rehearsing new songs in the evening break, then an early meal at least two hours before the show. Then I shower and get ready for work.

Kenny Stewart is originally from Virgina, USA and has lived in Tenerife for 11 years. He is a singer/songwriter/actor and lives in Los Abrigos

I was one of the original members of the David Bowie ‘Spider Murphy’ tour and also sang backing vocals for Meatloaf. I also acted in several Broadway musicals, such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Oliver Twist and Hello Dolly.

After working with Frank Farian in Munich, I came to Tenerife for sun, sand and sea, where I sang with the Alabama Soul Band.

These days I sing with the Drifters at Castillo San Miguel. My job also involves making up new dance steps and keeping the voices in check.

Whenever I have to perform, I always get butterflies and I love it, it’s what makes me perform the best.

If I had to give advice to someone thinking of establishing themselves as a performer I’d say, be sure it’s what you want, be on time and give your best. Every show you do either leads to another or puts a stop to your career.

Paul Stone was born in Athens but is from Nottinghamshire and has lived in Tenerife for nine years. He is a Billy Idol impersonator and lives in Torviscas Alto

I do my Billy Idol rock show twice a night and I also play rock n’ roll songs in various bars and hotel. O'Flaherty’s, in Los Cristianos and St. Eugens, in Las Américas, are my favourite venues because they’re lively places with a good sound and a nice crowd.

When I was younger I wanted to be in the forces until the mid 80’s, when I started listening to rock, gothic and punk bands – then I wanted to be a singer! I came to Tenerife in 1995 for a holiday and liked the music scene here. I was lead singer in numerous rock bands in England, as well as working a satellite engineer but I wanted to do something different. I appeared in Stars In Their Eyes in 1996, which had a lot to do with my decision to come to here. It’s difficult establishing yourself. You need money while you’re looking for work and you have to have somewhere to live, also most bars already have full schedules.

My first gig is at 10pm and last about 45 minutes, and then it’s off to the next one, which lasts from about 11pm to midnight. Afterwards I have a beer at the bar, wind down and either meet the lads somewhere for a drink or go home, shower, watch a bit of TV and go to bed.

This is an updated version of an original article published by Living Tenerife magazine. Living in Tenerife is a beautifully produced, glossy magazine. It covers all aspects of living in Tenerife from buying property and business to recreation and restaurant recommendations.
